Italy’s top TV lighting designer Pino Quini has specified 12 Robe DigitalSpot 5000DT moving head projectors for the popular series 'Tutte Donne Tranne Me' (All Women Except Me), a one man show starring actor/singer Massimo Ranieri with special guests.

The new RAI 1 show is broadcast live from Studio 15 of Rome’s Cine Citta complex and is on air at 9 p.m. Friday – one of the channel’s coveted prime time TV slots.

The scenic design by Marco Calzavara includes a 360 degree white cyclorama which encases the whole studio set, including the seating stands and the stage. “It was an obvious artistic decision to make in filling this space with colour and texturing” explains Quini, but he wanted to go beyond just gobo and lighting effects ….. to moving images and photographic impressions … and so, it was the ideal time to try out Robe’s new DigitalSpots.

Quini is already familiar with Robe moving lights and has used them on many of his other shows. He knows the brand is reliable, he just needed to see the features and functionality of the DigitalSpot 5000DT in action before committing to so many of them on his show.

Robe Italia’s Marco Bartolini and Robe Show Lighting’s Ales Grivac set up a special demo, which suitably impressed Quini, and thereafter he chose 12 of them for the show.

The 12 fixtures are being supplied by Di & Di Lighting & Truck SRL from Rome.

They are rigged around a circular truss in the middle of the studio, each focussed onto its portion of the cyc with the overall image soft-edged together using one of the DigitalSpots most powerful features. They are used to produce a diverse variety of different scenic looks and effects – from enormous lips and pop art backgrounds to swirling psychedelic and kaleidoscopic effects to dreamy cloud, water and environmentally inspired impressions. “The range just from the onboard library – plus what you can do additionally in terms of manipulating the content – is just incredible” he says. “It has transformed the show into something really special visually”.

He is using a mixture of the DigitalSpot 5000DT’s onboard media content, combined with some specially created video and stills clips, which are all stored in the fixture’s onboard media server.

The show has approximately 25O specially prepared files to choose from, of which they are currently using about 120 in each show.

Quini loves being able to change the "digital scenery" instantly. “DigitalSpot is really such a dynamic tool for a show like this, where there’s lots of different guests, and multiple mood and scene changes throughout”.

He also likes the fact that using DS5000s brings video elements of the show under his control as lighting designer. While this intensifies and makes things more complex on one level, the overall task of balancing lighting and scenic looks perfectly becomes more coherent when controlled by one person. He can tweak parameters like the colours/textures/focus the projections etc, without having to rely on any other departments.

As "Tutte Donne Tranne Me" is the first time he’s used the DigitalSpots, the process of working them into the show is currently still “very much an evolution”.

One of their initial ideas was to have large cinemascope type images circulating around the studio, an effect that looks stunning on camera and is easily possible with the DigitalSpots.

The DigitalSpots are being operated by Quintino Caci using a Compulite Sabre console (he is also running the moving lights), while Sandro Fedele using another Sabre is operating the wash lights. Two Spark 4D desks are used for all the studio’s ‘white lights’.

Quini is already planning to use DigitalSpot 5000DTs on his upcoming shows, including an Italian version of the UK hit "Dancing On Ice", scheduled to be recorded at the Voxsion Studios in Rome.
